about
Thank you Matty (of Neutral Shirt fame) for letting me turn your birthday song into a New Years song for the world.
Thank you to jalipaz at audioconfusion in Mesa, AZ for mixing and mastering and AP Fiedler for doing the artwork! This was my first time tracking all the instruments and vocals from my home and my first time commissioning AP Fiedler for album artwork!
I also wanna thank Mo Troper for being my lyrical adviser, suggesting I change a line that would end up becoming a crucial part of this song, "hope this finds you warm and dear". I also wanna thank Patrick Sexton for helping co-produce the arrangement! Recording everything from home is a fairly new concept for me and knowing when to stop fiddling is important. Thanks, Pat.
It's a little bit joyful and a little bit melancholy, as the end of the year can sometimes feel. Patrick told me that the song reminds him of driving around town after the holidays and still seeing the Christmas lights still hung up. I like that. Anyways, I wish you all the love, support, understanding , and everything else you deserve in 2021! I hope this song finds you warm and dear, in the new year.
lyrics
"happy new matty,
thinking of you fondly,
foliage on palm trees,
noted in my diary.
now i need to ponder,
what’s been over yonder?
can i ask myself this,
and find my answer?
it comes and it goes,
the record shows,
you can hang on tight,
but you still won’t know,
hope this finds you warm and dear,
in the new year.
so happy new matty,
happy birthday bobby,
hallelujah gabi,
hey kris kohlrabi.
saw my own reflection,
making no connection,
felt so fine to let be,
what came so naturally.
it comes and it goes,
the record shows,
you can hang on tight,
but you still won’t know,
hope this finds you warm and dear,
in the new year."

Still get that same feeling I had when I listened to this on repeat back in 2010/2011. This takes me back to a very special part of my past. And sometimes it hurts to think of, but I'm happy that it happened. zilannoj
